You know that episode of The Simpsons where they come to Australia? I love that one. I just finished watching the recent Aussie doco ‘Not Quite Hollywood’. It’s kinda like that episode in that it celebrates our culture by looking at our Ozploitation (Aussie exploitation) genre flicks from the 70s and 80s. I had no idea this filthy, sleazy and cheap shit existed, and it’s fucking sick (in the good way).


They included films like the comedies (basically just great softcore porn) ‘Alvin Purple’ and 'Barry Mackenzie Holds His Own' (how bloody Aussie does that sound) which were pretty much just a celebration of the Tit and the Arse. I never want to see another set of gigantic 70s pubes again after seeing this though. Then there were the weird-arse splatter action and horror ones such as ‘Howling III’, ‘Dead End Drive In’ and ‘Stunt Rock’, which have ridiculously (but hilarious) dangerous stunts like the cast forced to swim with real crocodiles and people really getting burnt from being set on fire. Quentin Tarantino’s even interviewed, proclaiming his love for them by exclaiming several times that they “fucking rock!”, and saying other cool things like that. This doco makes me realise how awesome our Aussie culture is. Or as Barry Humphries points out, “Australia isn’t a place that needed culture”. So in celebration of this culture for lunch today I’m having a Chiko roll from the local corner store 'Ray's' and later at the pub tonight only drinking VB. I’d get Fosters but I don’t think we have it anymore, do we mate? Devo.
